A Trip to Hyderabad – The Pearl City

If you happen to travel to South India for your holidays, then make it a point to visit the land of the Nawabs. Fondly called Pearl City, Hyderabad in India is famous for its historical landmarks dating back 400 years, pearls, Hyderabad Biryani (food prepared from rice, meat, chicken and vegetables) and Hyderabad Haleem (semi solid food item prepared from wheat flour with a choice of vegetables, meat or  chicken).

The Rajiv Gandhi International airport in Shamsabadh caters to both national and international flights. Although a fair distance from the city center, cabs are available aplenty to transport visitors and provide the best means of transport around the city. Buses, though frequent are not recommended. Alternatively, local trains provide transportation to many places within the city.

 

The climate is mostly sunny and hot. Post June and the winds pick up speed. The months of December and January are cold and you may need woolen wear to stay warm.

The history of the city dates back to the Nawabi era and most of the historical landmarks were constructed in that period. Be sure to add the heritage site of Charminar to your list of must visit attractions.

The structure provides a unique identity to Hyderabad with its minarets soaring to a height of 48.7 meters. Right next to this structure lies the Mecca Masjid, a sacred place of worship for Muslims, which resembles pure poetry in stone.

Visit the Golconda Fort famous for its incredible acoustics, palaces and the creative water supply system. The fort also features a sound and light show which is not to be missed. The Qutb Shahi Tombs are the oldest historical monuments in Hyderabad and is the burial place for an entire dynasty of rulers.

Other interesting sites include the legislative assembly, Birla Mandir, and the Osmania University which is touted to be one of the oldest and largest universities in India.

Hyderabad has its own share of museums and the ones you don’t want to miss include: the Salar Jung Museum which houses some very rare collectibles of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan among other ancient items; the Nizam’s Silver Jubilee Museum which showcases ancient gift items and mementos presented to the last Nizam; the Andhra Pradesh State Archaeological Museum which is renowned for its unique collection of antiques and art objects; and the Birla Science Museum, also called the Birla Planetarium.

There are numerous zoos and wild life parks scattered across the city. The most notable ones include: the Nehru Zoological Park and KBR National Park within city limits, the Mrugavani National Park in Chilkur, and the Mahavir Harina Vanasthali National Park.

Families in Hyderabad spend most of their weekends in one of the numerous parks in the city.

The Public Gardens is a must visit and houses the State Legislature and an open air theater in addition to other buildings. Boating is a pleasure in the artificial Hussainsagar lake and the Lumbini park borders the lake at one end.

The Shilparamam Arts and Crafts Center is a god send for budding artists and craftsman alike. Various exhibitions are conducted in the building to encourage aspiring and deserving artisans from around the country to showcase their work.

The Ramoji Film City is Hyderabad’s own Hollywood Studio. With a studio that sprawls over a stunning 1000 acres, this attraction is situated on the outskirts of the city and can be visited through organized tours.

A complete shopper’s delight, anything and everything can be found in Hyderabad with a marvelous bargain. Shop for souvenirs, pearls; stone studded bangles, jewelry, textiles, traditional craft and art items, footwear etc. in various markets around the city.

The major shopping areas include Abids, Nampally, Basheerbah known for their sophisticated showrooms and Begum Bazaar, Charminar known for bargains. Other interesting areas include, Ameerpet, Panjugutta, Somajiguda and Himayathnagar. A special mention needs to go to the Laad Bazaar in Charminar which is world famous for its stone studded bangles and glass beads.

If you are traveling with kids and need to unwind with them, then visit one of the many resorts and theme parks that dot the city. Ocean Park and Mount Opera amusement parks are located outside the city and provide various amusement rides, water rides, entertainment for all ages, wining, dining and overnight stay options.

The biggest indoor snow theme park in the world is right here in Hyderabad. Snow World, a must visit, is just where you need to be at the end of a hot sunny day of sightseeing.

Other notable amusement parks include; Treasure Island, Dream Valley Resorts, and Celebrity Club.

You can also choose to unwind at some really luxurious resorts with fun filled activities for the entire family. Some of them include: Dhola-ri-Dhani, Lahiri Resorts, Pragati Green Meadows and Resorts, Leo Meridian Resort, Alankritha Resort and Golconda Resort and Spa.
