Why Benaras?

Talk about vacations, and the things that comes to the mind are fun, good food, enjoyment, partying. But for a change, think about relaxation of the mind, a way of connecting with the universe, knowing god and knowing yourself. If these are the emotions that come in your mind, know that Benaras is calling you. Located in Uttar Pradesh, spanning many ghats (bathing places) and lining the majestic Ganges, Benaras, Varanasi or Kashi (which means the city of light) is the perfect place to visit if you want to take a break from the hectic everyday life and seek god. It is a famous pilgrim spot, since a dip in the Ganges is believed to wash away all your sins, and provide you with a relaxed mind. Try spending some time in the ghats, watching the morning sun rise and the monks offering their prayers to the Lord.

Changed outlook

A change in your outlook towards life can be found when you will see the beautiful amalgamation of Muslims and Hindus, performing the rituals together. You can even lay your hands on some exclusive silk saris woven by Muslim experts. You will be amazed by the fact that the crowns of some deities in the Hindu temples are made by the Muslim craftsmen. An evening can be spent listening to the soothing music played by Muslims and Hindus together.

Patriotic feelings of Indians can be awakened with a visit to the Bharat Mata temple, which has a huge map depicting the rivers, lakes and mountains of the country. Also, foreign tourists can get enlightened on the true beauty of India. The Kusumi forest acts as a great picnic spot where the whole family can enjoy watching animals and birds in their natural habitat.

Benaras is also considered as the final place of salvation by the Hindus. You can find, on the Benaras ghats, many Hindus immersing the ashes of their departed relatives and performing the rites of their ancestors. This aspect has attracted the attention of many foreigners who come here and perform the same rites for their friends and relatives.

Temples and Forts

The Golden Temple, one of the oldest and holiest temples dedicated to lord Shiva in Benaras, is covered exclusively by gold and copper. Vishweshwara or Vishwanatha, which means the Ruler of the Universe, is the main deity adorning the temple. The Ramnagar Fort houses a temple and a museum replete with guns, antique clocks and gold plated weapons used by the Maharajas. These and the exquisite vintage cars provide for a great evening for the car freaks, and of course who can forget the huge number of pictures you can upload on your social networking sites for your friends back home? You can also visit the Durga (a representation of Parvathi, consort of Lord Shiva) temple, where you can shake hands with monkeys and Chinnamastika temple, which is just around the corner.

When to visit and what to expect?

The best time to visit Benaras is between October and March, when the climate is pleasant, giving you ample time to try the various sweets, the famous benarasi paan (betel leaf) and also pick up some great handicraft products, lamp shades, carpets and wall hangings for friends and family.

For the educationally inclined, the Benaras Hindu University, founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, will give company the entire day, what with its area spread over 2000 acres, comprising of around 128 independent teaching departments.

Take a boat around the Ganges and explore the place, or visit the Sarnath museum, which gives a deep insight on the teachings and the times of Lord Buddha. Blog quiniela

You can also get a train to Kashi or Benaras junction from Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Ahmedabad.
