Best Places To Visit In Montreal

Montreal is one of the sophisticated cities in Canada but still has not lost its small town charm. The city is around 400 years old and is now an established place for higher learning, art and ecotourism.

The people in this city are very friendly and are very progressive in nature. Montreal is famous world over for the exemplary dining and you should not miss the local specialties. However, since many people are not too sure about what to see in Montreal, here is a list of the best places to visit in Montreal.

Best Places To Visit In Montreal

Insectarium

Even if you are a bit squeamish about beetles and other insects, you should not miss this attraction as it is one of a kind. The exhibit is housed in a building which looks like a bug in the middle of the Life Botanical Garden. The place is very popular with kids and adults alike. There are more than 250,000 insects in its collection but they are either mounted or behind thick glass enclosures.

You will come across cockroaches which are the size of the thumb of a wrestler. But do not shudder as they are behind the glass! The best part of the exhibit is the room with free-flying butterflies which will remind you of the Butterfly Garden in Singapore. This is not all. The Insectarium, at different times of the year, invites chefs to prepare delicacies like chocolate-dipped locusts for the tourists.

Chalet du Mont-Royal

Your trip to Montreal would be incomplete without a visit to the terrace right in front of the iconic landmark, Chalet du Mont-Royal. It offers a spectacular view of the city and the river. If you are lucky enough to get clear skies then you can also view the skyscrapers and the mountains of St-Gregoire and St-Hilaire.

Don’t forget to go inside the chalet and view the wonderful murals which depict the history of the country. If you are hungry, then head to the snack bar located in the backside.

Exporail

Exporail is Canada’s rail museum located in downtown. The museum has more than 100 train cars and locomotives of the yesteryears. You just cannot miss the CPR5935 which is the largest steam locomotive built in Canada.

You can also view the private car of Sir William Van Horne. But the most interesting thing in the museum is perhaps the car which acted as the mobile classroom. There are train excursions to the museum from Gare Lucien-l’Allier. The museum opens at 10:00 in the morning.

La Ronde

If you are traveling with kids then you just cannot miss La Ronde. It is an amusement park that takes ‘special care’ to scare the lunch out of you. Ednor is the prime attraction which is a high speed roller coaster that goes turtle five times!

If you are not impressed by this one then try the Goliath or the Vampire. The park is also the venue for the annual International Fireworks Competition. You need to come to Montreal in late June and July to witness this event which has earned worldwide reputation.
