Corfu – A Charming Greek Island
Natural and man-made beauty
Corfu is one of the most popular Greek islands in the Ionian Sea. It is unusually green with millions of olive trees. Travelers love this little paradise for its enchanting landscapes, scenic coves filled with crystal water and astonishing greenery merging gently with the turquoise blue sea.
This charming island also bears the traces of different civilizations that influenced its built attractions in the shape of places of worship, Byzantine churches, old forts, attractive houses with balconies and beautiful wrought-iron fences, gardens with flower beds, public buildings and arcades lined with tempting shops. The ensemble of all this creates the ambience of an era that we all love to cherish.
Archaeological remains
Corfu abounds with several archaeological sites – both religious and historical – like the following -
The Ancient Site of Palaiopolis. It was famous for its markets. Locals call these ‘agora’. Other monuments on this site are the Doric Temple of Kardakios, Roman Baths and some post-Hellenistic buildings. Local museum exhibits the remains of excavated relics.
The Grave of Menekratis. This 6th century BC monument was discovered in 1843. A verse is inscribed on it that is considered to the oldest in Greece.
Ruins of Roman Baths. These are considered to be a group of ancient Roman buildings.
The Temple of Artemis Gorgous. These well-preserved Doric temples were constructed in the 6th century BC.
Sun, sand and sea
A pleasant combination of these three elements makes Corfu’s golden and sandy secluded beaches absolutely wonderful for enjoining a perfect holiday and indulging in various water sports. Your pleasure won’t diminish a bit if you just lie on the sand, bask in the sun, and watch the sea gulls hunting for fish under a blue sky. Just relax and wait for lunchtime.
Food and drinks Noticias raras y curiosas
Having good food and wine is an important task for enjoying a holiday, especially when you are in a Greek island where a wide variety of these two items are available in plenty. Head for a taverna when you are hungry or thirsty, or whenever you are both. Fish here is fresh and good. Greeks love their lamb and pork. They use a lot of olives, cheese, eggplant, zucchini and yogurt.
Tavernas normally don’t sell bottled wine. Ask for wine like Retina or Arkadia that most that most people drink. Remember the clearer and more golden wine is a better variety.
Nightlife
Nights in Corfu are very magical. Here you get excellent opportunities to mix relaxation with lively nightlife. There is a wide range of bars and tavernas where you can often enjoy music. If you prefer more action then head for nightspots along the beach resorts like Ekati and Esperides. Corfu by Night is livelier and very touristy.
Hotels
Being an immensely popular tourist destination, Corfu offers a wide range of accommodation options. Hotels and resorts are scattered all over the island, especially in the town or Corfu. Browse through relevant websites for selecting a hotel that you fancy and spend your next holiday in Corfu.
