Denali National Park

Denali National Park and Preserve is situated in interior Alaska. The park surrounds Mount Mickinley, the tallest mountain in North America. The word Denali means ‘high’ in the native language of Athabaskan and refers to Mt. Mickinley.

In addition, it also houses a vast array of wildlife. It was designated as an international biosphere reserve in 1976. Whether you are planning a short day-trip or want to enjoy an extended back country escapade, Denali National Park has the ability to fit the bill and enchant you for sure.

The major highlight of the park is spotting wildlife. Binoculars have to be kept ready at all times to spot the numerous moose, bears, caribou and dall sheep. Encountering a bear or a moose is rare, but is still possible. However, it’s advisable that the visitors stay in groups and avoid carrying food while trying to sight the animals. The moose are pretty much harmless animals, but a mother moose is often overprotective of her babies and hence may turn out to be dangerous at times.

The Denali terrain is made of two floral zones, ‘tundra’ and ‘taiga’. The ‘taiga’ zone is located 2700 feet above sea level. It mainly sees the growth of stubby, evergreen spruce and aspen trees. The tundra region mostly consists of miniaturized plants and shrubs of various kinds.

The park’s climate is very unpredictable. Climatic changes occur without any warning. Visitors are often advised to expect sun, rain, clouds and wind on the same day. In fact, the park saw snowfall in August one year. A rare, but possible instance in the park. The summers are mostly cool and damp, but high temperatures are recorded sometimes. According to the park laws, entry fee charged for a single person is $10, which lasts 7 days. For a vehicle, the park charges $20, which also is valid for 7 days. But more often than not, the park authorities fail to keep record of the fees being taken. Transport inside the park restricts the usage of a car beyond the 14 mile limit.

Beyond that limit, one can venture around the park in shuttle buses, mountain bikes or on foot.
