Diabetes should definitely not stop you from travelling with your loved ones. You don’t want to miss out on the fun and frolic. But at the same time, keep your health under constant check.

Consult your physician well in advance, preferably around 6 weeks and keep in constant touch with him. Insist on all the necessary tests that might be needed. Also ask him what steps you can take incase a problem comes up. Have your cholesterol and blood glucose level checked. Carry a book with you whenever possible and note down any changes in your health and convey the same to your physician.

Have all medications and supplies ready at all times, and keep a note as to when and how many times a day you need to take them. If possible, have someone else monitor the same. What you eat plays a huge part in keeping a check on your condition and sugar intake. Have a meal plan chalked out from a nutritionist or your physician. Stick to that meal plan for most of part of your vacation. Indulge occasionally, but know your limits. But to keep normal blood levels, it’s better to stick to the normal routine. Also depending on your destination, you will be given a different plan.

 

Be sure to take insurance so that in case a problem occurs, this insurance can cover it. It’s always good to plan and think ahead. Also discuss in detail about any treatment or hospitalization that the insurance may be ready to take care of, on your behalf.

Keep the insulin away from direct sunlight and protect it from temperature changes. If travelling by air, keep it in your hand bag, since you will need it any time, and this also protects it from freezing. Always take twice the quantity of diabetes supplies, glucose tablets, testing strips and syringes, since you never know about robberies or the place that you might be going to. First aid kit and emergency numbers should be kept handy.

As far as possible, take your own food and avoid alcohol. Wherever you go, make sure to get up, flex your muscles and move around. Use sunscreen when out in the sun, as sunburns are very common with diabetics. Take care to avoid dehydration and nausea. Keep a check on your blood glucose levels on a regular basis.
