Cramps and pains are an unavoidable part of early pregnancy. Although a pregnant woman might be concerned and consider the cramps a sign of a possible miscarriage, more often than not abdominal cramps in pregnancy are absolutely normal.
These cramps are similar to the ones felt during the periods and are often accompanied by other signs of early pregnancy like low back pain and vaginal pain.
One of the most common causes of early pregnancy cramps is implantation. When the egg implants into the uterus after fertilization, it results in slight menstrual type cramps along with other early pregnancy signs like mild spotting. Most of the times women do not even notice these cramps or disregard it as menstrual cramps.
The cramps can also be the result of the development of the corpus luteum cyst. This cyst is formed in the ovary post ovulation and is responsible for the release of the progesterone hormone during the second trimester of pregnancy which in turn helps in the thickening of the uterus and facilitating implantation.
As the muscles of the uterus expand itself to support the growing weight of the fetus you may experience some cramping and lower abdominal pain. This may continue in the second and the third trimester as well. Health Tips
In addition to this constipation caused by the growing uterus and the high levels of progesterone can cause abdominal cramps in early pregnancy. A hot shower or warm compresses can help relieve this pain. Pain relievers can also help in relieving these cramps.
Ensure that you seek the doctor’s opinion before taking any medication. While these are some of the normal causes for early pregnancy cramping, abdominal cramps can also be the result of a miscarriage.
If the cramps are severe and accompanied by severe bleeding and tenderness in the belly, then it can be asign of a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. This is a serious condition and needs to be addressed immediately.
So if you have abdominal cramps that persist for weeks and is accompanied by heavy spotting then it is time to seek the help of the medical professional immediately.
