Oia, Santorini Greece

Oia, situated in Santorini, Greece is a place for people who like calm, quiet and serene surroundings. It is a village situated 11km from Fira, and offers the perfect snapshot of the setting sun in the evenings. The houses are white washed and simple to look at, and the place consists of many blue-domed churches offering the perfect blend of religion, culture and nature.

Famous for its sunset, Oia is a place which invites many tourists across the globe to enjoy their evening by standing at the edge of the rim, which opens upto a vast ocean filled with crystalline, pristine water. The spectacular view sometimes forces people to give a round of applause, when the sun sets and paves its way for a dark night ahead.

The nightlife is not the usual party scene. Instead, it’s all about a nice evening sitting at the terrace of your hotels and gazing at the blue sky. For a change, skip the drink and dance, and go for walk into the village houses, talk to people around and know more about the culture of Oia. If you expect nightclubs and bars, you can head to Fira, which is about 11 km away. Oia nightlife is ideal for a quiet time with family and friends.

Shopping in Oia can be a bit expensive but you can lay your hands on some interesting books, clothes, exclusive jewellery, apparels, souvenirs and gifts. Shopkeepers generally charge a lot, so it’s better to buy only if you really find something unusual. Tefra Art Gallery provides for some interesting artifacts to be presented as souvenirs to family and friends.

Oia can best be explored by walking through the various lanes, small houses made up of soft rock and the Katharos beach, one of the best beaches in Santorini. It offers for some excellent moments amidst greenery, palm trees and crystal clear blue water. Nested amidst cliffs and rocks, it is not much crowded and can be reached by a car following instructions in Oia village. The splashing waves and chilled out music in the bars and restaurants nearby offer some good company, where you can just be immersed in your thoughts. The bars are splendidly decorated with dimmed lanterns, soft, soothing music, cushions and spacious seating area for the perfect evening. Sunsets can also be enjoyed here.

Animal lovers will specially find Oia interesting, since you can develop your bond with cats which keep roaming around on the streets. You can even sometimes expect a fun time having your breakfast, when cats suddenly pop out of nowhere to give you company. And there are also certain places which can only be reached by riding on a donkey or a mule. Indeed a holiday with a difference.

If you want to explore a place hidden in a far away land, away from the crowd, steeped in simplicity and natural beauty, where you can simply climb the hills, go hiking and shout from the rooftops,  spend a day at Aegean Sea, exploring the Ikaria islands. Here, you can be one with the nature, the silent breezing air, and the pure sea.

In western Oia, Lontza castle provides a complete view of the place and leads to Ammoudi, a port which has around 214 steps paved with beautiful flowers offering a romantic evening walk with your beloved. You can go by car or simply walk, or even take a mule for your transport.

You can treat yourself to some excellent oil massage at the Caldera Massage Studio which has an arrangement of a cave-like structure giving it the appearance of a soothing, quiet environment. You can take a boat ride to Therasia island, which will take you back in time and give you a laid-back feeling with its old churches and houses.

You can get a flight from Athens to Oia, or reach Oia by taking a rented car from Santorini. So pack your bags and head to a distant place, away from the maddening crowd. Come to Oia.

I am a professional photographer and came back to the states with a photo of the TEFRA Art Gallery you mentioned above. Please, can you tell me anything more about this place and the place next door Moby Dick? I can get the photos published but need the owners permission. Any information you can send me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance,
