Munich is located on the banks of Isar River in the Upper Bavarian plains, close to the northern periphery of Alps. Munich is famous for its historical buildings as well as its modern architecture.  The city is known for its numerous gardens and parks.

Munich is also renowned for its museums, art galleries and continues to be an important center of literature.  Here is my compilation of great attractions in Munich.

Tourist Attractions In Munich

Marienplatz

In the heart of Munich lies the central square Marienplatz. It has been the main square of the city since 1158. All throughout the Middle Ages till the year 1807 the square was the main market place in the city. Despite the marked move to Viktualienmarkt, Marienplatz continues to be the focal point of Munich.  In the centre of the square is Mariensaule or St. Mary column that was erected to commemorate the end of Swedish invasion in the year 1638 AD during the Thirty Years’ War.

The four corners of the column have four statues of putti symbolizing Munich’s triumph over war, heresy, hunger and pestilence. On top of the column of St. Mary is a golden statue of Virgin Mary.  Some of the other prominent landmarks on the square are New Town Hall, Old Town Hall and Fischbrunnen. The best way to reach Marienplatz is using the subway U6 and U3.
