Haunted Hotels in California- Queen Anne Hotel, San Francisco | Travel Destination

Located at 1590 Sutter Street in Octavia, San Francisco, the Queen Anne Hotel may look like any other normal upscale hotel in the area. However, the hotel has a secret past that becomes visible to guests on their first night at the hotel.

Wonder why? Because the Queen Anne Hotel in which is situated in sunny California is supposedly haunted.

The hotel offers lodging and breakfast in addition to being a popular venue for events and celebrations. The hotel has a charming style and decorum in addition to exuding a warm ambience. Built in traditional Victorian style, the hotel’s interiors are changed periodically to reflect the current season.

The hotel is spread over 4 floors and the central lobby features a comfortable foyer, library, parlor and salon, courtyard and boardroom. An extravagant stairwell takes guests to the upper floors of the establishment which house the rooms. All the rooms and suites located on the first floor of the building have high celings. Most of the rooms have large fireplaces, en suite bathrooms and are aesthetically decorated.

The Parlor and Salon are situated right next to each other and are joined by an interconnecting doorway. The parlor resembles an ancient Roman space with its grand Italian columns and a large fireplace.

The Salon houses the main dining room and can seat up to 80 guests at any one time. Decorated with heavy Venetian interiors, the salon comes complete with lavish drapes, mirrors, chandeliers and a huge fireplace.

All these descriptions may make the hotel look just like a run of the mill luxury boutique. However, story goes that Senator James G. Fair built a boarding/finishing school in San Francisco in 1889 to remain close to his daughters. He named the school as The Mary Lake School for Girls after his favorite mistress Mary Lake and appointed her as the head mistress of the institution.

Mary Lake loved teaching and took it upon herself to groom the girls in mannerisms, social skills, politeness and other necessary etiquettes. So devoted was she to her profession that she couldn’t bear it when the school closed down in 1896.

Deserted after that, the building survived a massive earthquake and passed through many hands from 1906 to 1980 after which it was renovated and refurbished. Today, the building stands as the Queen Anne B&B Hotel.

In sharp contrast to certain ghosts which make their presence felt by harming visitors, the ghostly entity in the Queen Anne B&B takes care of its guests and makes them feel welcome.

Many guests claim to have felt the presence of Mary Lake in their rooms and in the corridors of the hotel. The most common encounters are that of a misty apparition resembling Mary Lake floating around and sudden cold spots.

Many tourists at the hotel have returned back to their rooms to find their bags unpacked, rooms cleaned, bed covers tucked in and objects placed in their respective places.

The room 401 formerly served as Mary Lake’s office and is the site of most of the manifestations. In addition to helping guests at the hotel, the ghost of Mary Lake has also makes her presence felt in social events that take place at the hotel.
