In the savannas and pastures of sub-Saharan Africa, a small bird soars above the vegetation during the breeding season

In the savannas and pastures of sub-Saharan Africa, a small bird soars above the vegetation during the breeding season. At first glance it looks like a common bird, until a very long tail begins to flutter behind it like a black tape floating in the air. Every move is designed to draw attention.

The long-tailed lyre is famous for the extraordinary plumage that males develop during the breeding season. The tail feathers can several times exceed the length of its own body, making it one of the birds with the most striking proportions on the African continent.

However, this spectacular ornament comes with a price. The huge tail increases the resistance of the air and makes the flight slower and demanding. Escaping a predator or maneuvering through vegetation requires a lot more effort than other birds of similar size.

The most impressive thing is that this apparent disadvantage constitutes precisely their biggest reproductive advantage. Females prefer males able to survive and fly with such a long and heavy tail, as this trait can be a sign of good health and excellent physical conditions.

During display flights, the male ascends over the pasture trees while his tail sways elegantly behind him. The more eye-catching and well-kept, the greater your chances of attracting a partner.

The long-tailed lyrebird proves that evolution doesn't always reward efficiency alone. Occasionally, the most extravagant traits survive because they become irresistible to those who must choose a partner. And when you watch this little bird cross the sky dragging a tail that looks like a living tape blown by the wind, you understand why it's among the most spectacular bird parade displays in the world.
