Tour to Kudremukh

If adventure is in your blood, pick up your gear and head to south-central Karnataka. In the Chikmagalur District of this state is located a lovely hill station that embraces the Western Ghats, and is a delight to both the trekker and the geologist.

This is Kudremukh. Rich in various deposits, primarily iron ore, Kudremukh has a unique name. It is derived from the two Kannada words, Kudure, meaning horse, and mukha, meaning face. The peak of the Kudremukh range is said to resemble the face of a horse, when seen from a distance!

The mountain range is well-suited for trekking. It is always on the list of any adventurer making a trip to south India. Located at the base of the Arabian Sea, this place has many mountains and hills that are joined together. They present a great challenge to the climber.

It offers a lot to the tourist, as well. The place is best enjoyed for its tranquility. It is completely cut off from urban development. The rivers, Tunga, Bhadra and Netravati have enriched the soil of this place, and are a sight in themselves. Another notable spot is Hanumana Gundi, whose waterfalls jump more than 100 feet into a naturally formed rock, and is a sight to enjoy. A lover of history can also visit the Jamalabad Fort which Tipu Sultan built in the 18th century in his mother’s memory.

The thick forest cover is home to several species of wildlife, but most adventurers find it daunting to explore this part of this hill station. Kudremukh National Park spans the state’s two districts, Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur.

One can cozy oneself in any of the various forest lodges. In the cool and relaxing weather, one can explore the highly diverse flora and fauna of the place.

This is the primary iron-ore mining area of the state. The state-owned Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd (KIOCL) is located here, and carries out mining and research activities.

This place is best accessed by air from Mangalore; if you are traveling by road, you can approach it from Chikmagalur, Mangalore or Sringeri. There are a number of private and government accommodations offered. The best time to visit the place is from May to October.
