Troubled past

Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Its rugged mountainous terrain, forested landscape and vast paddy fields stretching up to the horizon gives the impression that this predominantly agrarian country is an embodiment of profound peace and solitude like the religious faith of its people.

It is unbelievable that this peaceful country with the laidback attitude of its deeply religious people was a battleground for nine long years when Laos was dragged into the disastrous Vietnam War that ended in 1973. US bombers dropped more bombs on Laos than during the entire duration of the World War II.

Return of travelers

The War has ended a quarter of a century ago and peace has returned. International travelers are back again to this charming and peaceful land of mountains, mists and natural beauty.

Tourist attractions

Most people are practicing Buddhists. Temples and stupas dot the country’s skyline. The most popular temple town is Luang Prabang is now a UNESCO World Heritage City. Its magnificent temples not only attract Buddhists but also non-believers in great numbers from different parts of the world.

After visiting Luang Prabang proceed to Phousi Mountain and experience the glorious sunset.

Most tourist attractions in Laos are either a place of worship or nature, emphasizing the belief that God and Nature are inseparable.

Photographers’ delight

Wherever you go in Laos, keep your camera ready to take photographs of tonsured Buddhists monks wearing saffron and yellow robes walking in procession with benign smile on their faces towards a temple set amidst picturesque surroundings of a forested hill.

Laos is different

Laos is a different sort of destination for religious tourism than its more prosperous and better-known neighbor, Thailand. The relatively underdeveloped tourism structure of Laos has saved the country from becoming a commercial tourist destination. Its temples and stupas are mostly located in rugged mountains and fertile low lands in rural settings.

Other side of Laos

Laos is not all about spirituality. The people of Laos love to enjoy their life, like the Thais and Cambodians, who too are Buddhists. There are many pubs, restaurants and nightclubs in major cities of Laos. None of them suffer any financial loss because of shortage of patrons.

Nightlife scenario

The seedy nightlife of Laos during the colonial rule and Vietnam War has now been considerably reduced and regulated. The Laos capital, Vientiane, has fewer bars now and they all shut around midnight. Restaurants offer good food and good drinks. Peddlers don’t approach you for buying opium. Discos offer live music – both Western and folk songs of Laos. Trucos de los Sims 4

Paul Theroux, noted American travel writer and novelist said in his 1870 bestseller The Great Railway Bazaar about Vientiane: “…marijuana is cheaper than pipe tobacco, and opium easier to find than a cold glass of beer.” This is of course no longer true. Visits to nightclubs are clean now and doesn’t attract any stigma.
