On a sweltering afternoon, when the heat shivers the air over the landscape, an American black vulture stands motionless with its wings partially outstretched. She suddenly performs an action that seems strange and even unpleasant: it regurgates liquid over her own legs and part of her body. Far from an accident, it's a sophisticated survival strategy.
The American black vulture lives in warm regions of much of the American continent, where temperatures can reach extreme levels for much of the year. Since birds don’t have sweat glands like mammals, they need to find other ways to avoid overheating.
Throughout its evolution it developed several mechanisms to dissipate heat. Among them is a behavior known as urohydrosis, by which it releases fluids on its legs and other feathery areas of its body.
The most impressive thing is that the process works in a similar way to human sweat. As the liquid evaporates, it absorbs heat from the body surface and helps to reduce the bird's temperature. Thanks to this adaptation, the vulture can stay active even during the hottest times of the day.
The American black vulture proves that nature can find unexpected solutions to survival’s most basic problems. While enduring temperatures capable of putting many animals to the limit, it uses a cooling system that is as effective as it is unusual. And when you discover that this bird fights heat using a mechanism reminiscent of how sweat works, you understand why vultures are among the most resilient survivors on the American continent.
