On the tropical coasts of America, a huge bird blackflies for hours without even moving its wings. It takes advantage of the warm air currents that rise from the ocean and remains suspended in the sky with an elegance that few animals can match. But when the breeding season arrives, the males put on an impossible show.

The magnificent frigate is one of the most extraordinary marine birds on the planet. It has an enormous width in relation to its weight and can spend entire days soaring through the sky over open seas, traveling great distances in search of food.

Unlike other marine birds, it rarely perches on the water. Its feathers are not adapted to float for long periods, so it depends on its exceptional flight skills to survive.

The most impressive thing happens during courtship. The males inflate a huge red throat pouch located in the throat. As it fills with air, the chest transforms into a kind of scarlet balloon that can be seen from great distances. While displaying it, they raise their wings, shake their heads, and make sounds to attract the females that fly past the colony.

The size and intensity of the color of this structure can influence the choice of partner. The females carefully observe the candidates before deciding which one to reproduce with, turning the colony into a true visual competition scene.

The magnificent frigate demonstrates that some of the most spectacular displays in nature occur in the air. For millions of years, a courtship strategy has evolved that is impossible to confuse with that of any other marine bird. And when you watch a male transforming his throat into a gigantic red balloon that shines under the tropical sun while dozens of females fly past the colony, you understand why it is among the most striking courtiers in the animal kingdom.
