Over lakes, rivers and coasts of almost everyone around the world, a massive hummingbird flies over the water’s surface seeking movement beneath the waves. Suddenly, spot a fish. Partially folds the wings, spreads the claws and throws down. Seconds later he emerges with a prey trapped between his powerful legs and takes flight again.
The fishing eagle is one of the most specialized predators in catching fish. Unlike other eagles that hunt a wide variety of animals, this species gets most of its food directly from the water.
Transporting a fish, however, presents an aerodynamic problem. If prey is penetrated or placed sideways, the air exerts great resistance during flight, forcing the bird to spend more energy while transporting its catch.
The most impressive thing is that the fishing eagle automatically corrects this problem. Once caught the fish, it re-adjusts it with its claws until it is placed parallel to the flight direction, with its head pointing forward. This way reduces air resistance and can move much more efficiently to its nest or feeding site.
Kingfisher proves that even the tiniest details can make a huge difference in nature. For millions of years he perfected hunting and transport techniques that allow him to make the most of every catch. And when you watch this magnificent boy carefully accommodate a fish to make it a more aerodynamic charge before crossing the sky, you understand why he is among the most efficient fishermen in the animal kingdom.
