Pregnancy and High Blood Pressure
When a person’s arteries get constricted then the blood passing through them exerts pressure on the walls of the arteries. This is called blood pressure. If a person’s readings are more than 140 mm Hg (sylostic) or 90 mm Hg (dialostic) then it can be said that the person is suffering from high blood pressure which is also called as hypertension or the silent killer.
High blood pressure has many effects on your body such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, brain hemorrhage etc.
If you are a pregnant woman and have high blood pressure you have to take a lot of care of yourself so that no harm can cause to your unborn child. Remember, if you become careless high blood pressure can prove to be very dangerous for you and your child.
Your doctor will find out whether your BP is high or normal by checking through a machine called sphygmomanometer. (Electronic machines are in use these days) You yourself can measure your BP through some machines which are simple to use.
While pregnancy you may sometimes feel dizziness or faint. Actually during pregnancy the wall of your blood is relaxed due to a hormone called progesterone due to which your blood pressure sometimes comes down around the middle of pregnancy. Thus due to low BP you faint sometimes but it doesn’t last long and you resume to normalcy soon. So you don’t have to worry if you faint due to low BP. When your BP increases during pregnancy, the amount of blood to the placenta decreases due to which oxygen and nutrients supply to your baby gets limited. This is not good for your child.
If you are a BP patient and you are going to conceive, make sure to control your high BP through medications, exercise and diet full of fiber. You must reduce the intake of salt; avoid creamy and fast food. Also keep stress away from you during your pregnancy. There is no reason to worry during your pregnancy if you strictly follow the instructions to control high BP.
