It is normal that a pregnant woman will gain weight. This is because the body of a  pregnant woman is preparing to carry a life inside her womb. The nutrients required for the proper growth of the infant must come from its mothers body. A pregnant woman having twins can gain more weight than having a single baby. A pregnant woman having health body mass index can gain 37 to 54 pounds in case they are carrying twins  while an over weight woman can have a weight of 31 to 50 pounds. An obese woman can gain a weight between 25 to 42 pounds.
