Rome Travel Guide

Rome of Seven Hills is the ultimate package for the tourist as well as the pilgrim. It is this city that the Roman Catholics (which is why the name) consider their spiritual capital. Christianity, a religion born hundreds of miles away in West Asia, found its fullest conditions for growth here.

If, from its obscure beginnings in faraway Mediterranean, Christianity survived persecution and flourished to become the most important religion of Europe in less than four centuries, the main cause for this was Rome. Roman emperors starting from Constantine patronized Christianity and brought it to the center stage of European life and society.

Even after the decline of the Roman Empire in the fourth century, Rome continued to enjoy its stature as the seat of Catholicism, a position it enjoys to this day.

Considering that it is a city which has been in continuous existence for two and a half millennia, most of the city’s important artifacts are amazingly well preserved.

A tourist will never run out of options and choices when visiting Rome. The most important attraction, and in fact, the very symbol of Rome is the Colosseum, which has stood for 19 centuries. One of the most spectacular structures of the ancient world, this amphitheater was the city center, in which gladiators used to exhibit their talents.

Overlooking this is the equally famous Constantine’s Arch, which was built to commemorate his victory over Maximus.

In fact, architecture has been the constant in Rome. Right from the days of its establishment to almost the middle of the 20th century, Rome has had one or another addition to its architecture. This makes it a city one can never finish seeing quickly.

Among the monuments spanning all these centuries, there are innumerable famous ones that bring tourists from all over the world. Whether you are looking for ancient, medieval or Renaissance and Baroque or even Fascist monuments, the eye will never tire of these.
