Central Attractions: The Plaza Mayor is one of the central attractions in this beautiful city. Considered as one of the finest works of architecture in the entire country, the site is origninally a sqaure that comprises of several century old buildings with arcades in between.

Considered as a central location for ceremonies and festivals, the Plaza Mayor is filled with cafes, restaurants and bars where tourists can relax and watch the city fly by in the evenings.

Built somewhere around the same time as the city itself, the Salamanca University is one of the oldest buildings in the entire country. Formerly as popular as the Oxford, Bologna and Paris Universities, the Salamanca University today draws hordes of students aspiring to learn Spanish.

Boasting of having employed world renowned lecturers like mystic John of Cross and the humanist Fray Luis de Leon, the University rose to fame for recognising the Copernican system when it was still not formerly established anywhere else in the country.

When visting the Salamanca University, don’t miss out on checking out the Patio de las Escuelas. Situated right opposite the University, the small garden is quite picturesque with a monument of Fray Luis de Leon in the center and several buildings built in landmark Plateresque stye surrounding the site. The entire city has been constructed using sandstone which gives a natural golden glow to the buildings. The city has two famous cathedrals called the Convento de San Esteban and the Old Cathedral.

The former is located near the Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) and was constructed in the late 15th century. Comprising of a gold covered high altar, the church also houses three side altars, the tomb of the Duke of Alba and a wonderful fresco by the famed Antonio Palomino called “The Triumph of the Church”.

The Old Cathedral is located alongside the New Cathedral and can be accessed via a door on the Southern side of the former. Originally the Cathedral of Santa Maria de la Sede, the Old Cathedral was built in the 12th century and houses a wonderfully constructed chancel.

Situated on the southwestern end of the Plaza Corillo is a small square on which stands a monument that is a must visit for those who love art. The Casa de las Conchas, also called as the Hosue of Shells is a 15th century mansion which was the abode of Talavera Maldonado who was a knight of the order of Santiago.

The mansion has been designed using more than 300 scallop shells which throw off light in different colors and shades at different times of the day. Along with a well decorated two storey courtyard, the house also has a lavishly endowed staircase well with coffer ceiling and iron wrought window grilles.
