Scuba Diving in Gaya Island

Let’s take some time off from the hustle and bustle of civilized life and travel somewhere where we can be assured of peace, privacy and seclusion to enjoy some quality time with our loved ones.

Welcome to the quaint little isle called Gaya Island.

Situated just 20 minutes from Kota Kinabalu City in North Borneo, Malaysia, the island is a hidden jewel in the South China Sea. With unlimited wonders above the sea and more beneath, this island is a must visit for those who love nature at its’ best.

One of the most popular sports in Gaya is scuba diving. The underwater world beneath the island as well as its surrounding areas is touted to be one of the best scuba diving sites in the entire world and hordes of visitors visit the island every year just to dive into the crystal clear waters of the ocean and discover a completely new world.

Getting There: The nearest airport serving the island is Kota Kinabalu International Airport. There are plenty of cabs and taxis that transport guests up to KK Ferry Terminal from where a short boat ride would bring guests to the picturesque island.

Diving: The waters surrounding Gaya Island and Borneo are touted to be among the clearest in the world and diving in these waters is a pleasure with so much to explore and experience. There are so many marine animals to sight in and under the water that divers never tire of returning to the island on every available occasion.

Some of the more prominent species of marine animals that can be found in these waters include sea turtles, giant groupers, bamboo sharks, barracudas, clown fishes, marbles stingrays, titan trigger fishes and coral fishes.

If you think you need to be a certified diver to scuba dive in these waters, then you are wrong. For Gaya Island has a whole lot of PADI certified divers, trainers, guides and instructors who help you out even if you do not know the “A B C” of diving.

Guests to the resort are provided with a welcome kit which has everything a diver would need right from the wetsuits and the goggles to sun blocks and underwater cameras.

Guidance is offered at each step of the diving process and divers are first asked to undergo temporary training in a swimming pool for safety purposes. Added to this is the fact that the island for the most part is closed to the general public, and so divers, both experienced and novice can expect privacy. Accesorios para Jeep

Guests need not be apprehensive about wandering too far off from the island. For adventure travel in Gaya Island sits right on top of an abundant coral reef garden that gently slopes outwards as the depth increases. Visibility is almost perfect in the crystal clear water and one can expect a good visibility range of 5 to 10 meters.

One of the most popular diving sites near Gaya Island is the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park which houses over 20 spectacular dive sites. Consisting of every imaginable kind of coral gardens, reefs and marine animals, these sites make up the entire park which can be reached by boat from Gaya Island.

Some of the more popular of these sites include Sulman Reef, Edgell Reef, Agil Reef, Sapi Reef, Ron Reef, Gaya Island Reef and Polish/Bulijong Bay.

Those who strive for something other than scuba diving can find solace in plenty of other land and water activities. These include kayaking, snorkeling, jungle trekking, coral planting, fishing (restricted to catching and releasing), bird watching, under water fish feeding, sun set cruising, golfing and shopping.

Upon prior request, excursions to various areas on the main land and to other islands can be arranged for a nominal fee. These include trips to HornBill Beach, Gaya Fish Market, Gaya Street Market and Kota Kinabalu.
