Stanley Market, Hong Kong Guide

Stanley Market is known for a number of shops that sell garments, silk products and Chinese costume jewelry. You can buy a lot of souvenirs from this market. The place is popular both among the tourists and the locals. You can have your lunch at any of the restaurants.

When to Go

The market is a covered one and it is best to reach the market in the morning before the crowd trickles in. Be sure to reach there by 10:30 am so that you have enough time at hand to explore the market, do a bit of shopping and have your lunch at a good restaurant. Some tourists however arrive in the afternoon and after spending some time in the market, proceed towards Aberdeen.

How to Go

If you are not on a budget then you can hail a taxi and go directly to Stanley market. Every cab driver knows the market and you will face no problem in reaching there. The second option is to take a bus from the Exchange Square Bus terminus in Central. Bus # 6, 6A and 6X will take you there. There are all air – conditioned buses and the journey is a comfortable one.

You can also avail of the MRT and get down at Chai Wan station. After you leave the station via Exit C take the green minibus 16M to the Stanley market. Remember green minibuses are not known to be very comfortable.

What to do

Stanley is an old fishing village and the beauty of the place is not restricted to the market only. There are lots of places to see here like the KH Maritime museum, Stanley main beach, Tin Hau temple, Stanley Market and Stanley military cemetery.

What to Buy

Your shopping at Stanley market cannot be complete if you don’t buy any of the must haves. There are indeed a few things which every tourist must have and these include – Chinese bamboo bird cages for home decoration, Chinese embroidered table cloth, cheap watches, silk garments and fancy torches.

Where to Eat

Stanley has a number of good restaurants which serves international cuisine. Bayside Brasserie is known for Asian cuisine, pizza and Indian food. The Sukho Thai restaurant at level 2 of Stanley Beach Villa has some real good food but a bit expensive.
