If you are a believer of ghosts and ghouls, these places might interest you. Salem, New Orleans, Massachusetts and Louisiana in the United Stated have always been hot spots for witches and ghouls. And hence, if you happen to visit these areas, you will most probably spot quite a number of witch attractions.

The world has changed and so have the people with it! Witches are no longer green skinned ladies with long fingernails, conical hats and a cackling laugh. Modern witches are almost impossible to spot and blend in with the common crowd easily. However, if you really want to see what an olden day witch would look like, here are a couple of places you can check out during your visit.

Located in Salem, the Bell Witch Cave is an interesting tourist attraction. Originally a part of a bigger farm where the Trail of Tears is said to course through, the cave is supposedly gaurded by a feminine spirit or witch.

Those who attempt to take anything from the cave are said to face very bad luck which would continue until they return the item. It is also rumored that the cave is the ancient burial site for Native Americans who inhabited the region.

Again located in Salem is a very popular museum which is dedicated to witches. Called The Witch History Museum, the place focuses on witches that had lived in the region in the past including accounts of live encounters, life like wax figurines and spooky lighting effects.

One interesting story that is presented in the Witch Museum is that of the witch hysteria that occurred in the years 1692-1693. Along with a seemingly imposing commentary, the show takes place in a dark basement and is filled with spooky thrills and screams.

Another museum in the near vicinity offers shows of witch encounters and trials as well. Called the Witch Dungeon Museum, the museum is part of an elaborate cave system which is supposedly haunted by a witch called Sarah Goode. Scifi books reviews

The enactment of the story proceeds just as it happened in real life. Visitors are ushered into what looks like a courtroom complete with a jury box, a court bench and some trial participants. Apart from the accused and the prosecuter, the rest of the actors are dummies.

The actor who enacts the role of the witch appears in a dirty hooded cape and prances around cackling and screaming at the top of her lungs in the trial box. As the prosecuter shares her accounts of the witch’s doings, the former calls an invisible demon to attack the latter.

In the hullabaloo that follows, the witch crashes out of the trial box, plunges into the crowd and disappears behind a door. The show is quite realistic and draws plenty of tourists every day.

Another quite famous show called Cry Innocent –The People versus Bridget Bishop, where the audience gets to act as the jur,y is enacted on the street before proceeding to the courtroom. Enacted in downtown Salem, the first part of the show on the street is free for all to see.

Before the show starts, one can see a group of locals dressed as Puritans who distribute leaflets among the crowd and speak to tourists about the trial in a sharp archaic dialect. You could take a few pictures of them if you want to.

The show kicks off with a bang when a local, supposedly an actor spots the witch, Bridget Bishop and screams. The witch is then dragged through the streets to the town hall with the entire town following her. The final scene of the play takes place in an artificial courtroom where the audience gets to decide the fate of the witch.

There are a whole lot of other interesting witch museums and locations situated in all these towns. Before touring the area, you would probably want to check out the more interesting witch attractions through a local shop or tourist agency.
