Glittering city

Taipei is also the hub of Taiwanese finance, commerce, industry and culture. Because of its political and economical clout, Taipei has made tremendous progress over the past half a century and left far behind its earlier image of a city of sloth and squalor. It is now Taiwan’s most prosperous city and the most popular tourist attractions.

Taipei has now become a glittering modern city with redesigned business and residential districts. It has one of the tallest buildings in Asia and the state-of-the-art World Trade Center for promoting international trade and commerce. Where else can you find a fabulous bookstore that is open 24 hours but in this part of China where paper was invented first?

Exploring the city

Explore the bustling city, teeming with people. You have to wade through them – preferably on foot as much as possible – to get the exotic flavor of the place. Visit the many old Buddhist and Confucian temples even if you aren’t a believer.

Taipei markets are most exciting and lively. Move from stall to stall of the Shilin Night Market where you get a variety of items, especially clothing and footwear. Don’t buy anything without hassling over the price.

Historical sites

Travelers will have plenty to enjoy throughout their trip. There are lots to see in Taipei like Confucian Temple, Long Shan Temple, Bao An Palace, Taipei City Gate and many more.

Snake alley

Don’t get scared to go to the Snake Alley. You will find here a weird mix of fortune-tellers, tattoo parlors, fruit sellers and restaurants carrying out their business cheek by jowl with stalls where you can try a drink of snake blood and bile – with optional venom – removed from a freshly killed reptile and skinned in front of you.

This crazy concoction is believed to have the animalistic power to give you better eyesight, stronger spine and – hold you breadth – increased sexual vitality! There are still some people in the 21st century who believe in all these ritualistic mumbo jumbo!!

National Palace Museum

When Chiang Kai Shek was banished from the Chinese Mainland in 1948, he moved the Kuomintang outfit to Formosa, as Taiwan was then known, with a huge collection of priceless Imperial artifacts. For lack of space in this museum, only a fraction of those is now on display.

The Chinese not only love to eat, they live to eat. Cooking is an art for them. You no doubt get to eat Chinese food practically anywhere in the world, but you will only find authentic cuisine in Taiwan. Skip the snake variety, if you wish, from your menu!

Taipei abounds with Chinese restaurants serving a plethora of delicacies from roasted duck to beef with green peppers; from smoked chicken to fried shrimp and fish in wine sauce. For those who are strictly vegetarian, Chinese make excellent dish out of humble eggplants. Hausi Street is the best place to go to for a delicious Chinese meal. Crumbling Chinese Wall

Whether you are in Taipei or Shanghai, you will find many similarities. The wall between Communism and Capitalism is no longer impregnable.
