A visit to Singapore is never complete without visiting Sentosa Island. Formerly known for its famous bird park, the island now offers a whole horde of attractions and events that keep you on your toes. If you plan on visiting the island, it is best advised that you make it a day long visit to make sure you don’t miss out on anything.
Origin:- The word Sentosa means Peace and Serenity in Malay, but the actual island is far from it. We’re not talking about commotions and noises but the huge amount of tourists who flock to the place the year around. The island itself is the fourth largest in Singapore and covers an area of 5 square kilometers. If you think that it is quite small an area, you would be astounded by the sheer number of places you can visit and the activities you can partake in within this small area.
Most of the island is covered by rainforests and the rest houses notable sights with the beach extending across 3.2 kilometers of coastline. However, the government has proposed to increase the span of the area by reclaiming nearby land.
Getting there:- Sentosa is located right next to Singapore and you can easily reach the island via cable cars that pass between the islands or the Sentosa Express Monorail which starts at VivioCity in Singapore and stops at the Harbor Front Center MRT Station.
Traveling around the island is no big deal as there are numerous buses that scrounge throughout the island. These buses have been appropriately named Red, Blue and Yellow Lines. Trams are also common in the island and if you wish you can actually drive over to the island and around it in your car.
Not to be missed Events:- If you happen to be in Singapore during any of the below mentioned festivals or events, don’t miss out on the fun. Wear a uniquely designed balloon hat and release it in the air along with thousands of other balloon hats in the Balloon Hats Festival, tap your feet to the groovy music played by the Zouk nightclub in the annual ZoukOut Beach Party as well as the Siloso NYE Splash new year party; get a chance to meet professional golfers in the annual Barclays Singapore Open Golf Tournament, and take in the sweet aroma of thousands of flowers in the Sentosa Flowers Event which is held annually in the Fountains garden. The event also enables aspiring gardeners to showcase their skills along with painting and photography competitions.
Beaches and Spas:- The island has its own array of beaches and you can stop by at any one of them for some fun time in the sun and sand. All these beaches cover the southern region and are artificially built, though it is hard to make out the fact that they are not original. Have a lively time at the Palawan Beach which is lined with bars along the water or enjoy some sports in the Siloso Beach which is famous for numerous inland and water activities in addition to the world famous Shangri La Rasa Sentosa Resort. If you want to spend some quality time together, head out to the Tanjong Beach which is relatively less crowded and used mainly for special events.
Sentosa also has a total of three spas which offer internationally acclaimed treatments to soothe your senses. Go for a Turkish style mud and steam bath in the Spa Botanica massage parlor, let small Turkish of African fish nibble away at the dead skin on your foot in the Fish Reflexology Spa in the Underwater World or go for a completely luxurious spa treatment in the Health Club and Spa whose features and services make you feel like a member of the elite class.
Must Visit Sights:- The list of places to visit in the island is never ending. Apart from the sparkling sandy white beaches that beckon the tired traveler, there are numerous other places, each offering something unique, that you can visit.
If you are looking for a historical place, then Fort Siloso is where you need to be. The fort was supposed to guard the western end of the island in the Second World War and is the only standing witness to the entire Singapore Fortress. What was earlier used as a prison and warehouse to contain criminals and weapons is now home to an artillery museum in addition to other exhibits which include documentaries, photographs and copies of official treaties.
Visit the Merlion, a 37 meter high statue of Sang Nila Utama, who supposedly saw a lion on one of his hunting expeditions. You can view the statue from the base or choose to travel to the top via a lift and then view the entire city.
If you are a lover of nature, then Sentosa Island would definitely carve a niche for itself in your heart. The island is covered with wildlife enclosures and natural trails like the Nature Walk/Dragon Trail that course through the rainforest.
If you think butterflies in your stomach make you nervous, then wait till you walk into this spectacular outdoor garden. Called the Butterfly Park, the area is covered with almost 15000 butterflies of all colors and sizes. According to reports, there are nearly 50 species of butterflies in here.
If you are not scared of critters, then walk into the Insect Park which is said to preserve about 3000 different insects including some really rare ones. Știri de ultimă oră din Spania
Slide through an underwater aquarium on a travelator as fishes of all sizes swim overhead and beside you outside a glass tunnel. You also get to view at amazing corals and reefs. Called the Underwater World, the oceanarium also allows you to dive with sharks or Dugongs.
Located within the same premises is the Dolphin Lagoon where you get a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with some pink humpback dolphins. The staff organizes regular water sessions with the dolphins and you can also swim around with them.
Man Made Marvels:-
Make it a point to visit the Tiger Sky Tower which lets you enjoy a panoramic view of the island, nearby Singapore and even some islands far off the coast. The tower stands at a height of 110 meters, and you would definitely enjoy the ascent to the top which is inside a glass covered enclosure that rotates around the tower as it takes you to the top.
Witness the spectacular show (called Songs of the Sea) put up by the Musical Fountain located out at sea. It is the only one of its kind in the world and comes complete with a open air auditorium from which you can view the cast perform to the amazing pyrotechnic shows.
Experience the thrill of the cinema ride in the CineBlast which equals Universal Studios in its state of the art technology. Be thrown into a virtual world of excitement as you weave in and out of surprises, seated in a capsule that virtually tries to throw you off with its jolts and shakes (quite possible if you don’t wear the safety belt).
Get lost in the world of pirates as you enjoy this show in the original 4 dimensional theater which comes with individual special effects seats that will give you a spine chilling experience. Watch the 15 minute show as your seat quivers; tickles and sprouts water around you. It is guaranteed that you will enjoy the show to a maximum.
Recreational Sports:- Apart from all these places you can visit, Sentosa offers some dare devil rides for the more courageous traveler. Zip down the steepest steel cable in all of Asia (called MEGAZIP) and travel about 450 meters in the air before you come to a stop at Siloso Beach.
Fly away and conquer your greatest fear of heights in the Flying Trapeze. And if that is not enough, get into a three wheel cart and hurtle down a steep hill with no breaks until you reach the Siloso Beach some 650 meters away.
