For getting a glimpse of the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, you will first arrive at the archeological seat for the whole of Americas, Cuzco. This sacred city of the Incas is the starting point of the famous Inca Trail, the route that the visitors take to reach the famous monument.

Machu Picchu literally means the ‘Old Mountain’ in the ancient language of Incas. It is situated high above on a saddle overlooking the Urubamba River. The citadel was once the residence of the Inca ruler Pachacutec and apart from its normal function it also served as a religious place and an observatory.

Machu Picchu is broadly divided into 2 zones, the agricultural zone with terraced farms and storehouses for food; and the urban zone which is the site of temples, royal tombs, squares, etc. Each of these structures had been constructed with precise measurements and intricate carvings. The entire area was serviced by stone staircases for covering the gradients and a network of canals.

The Machu Picchu is towered over by the ‘Young Mountain’ or the Huayna Picchu. It has the appearance of a steep rock face, but one can hike up it over steep, stone paved trail for a grand view of the ancient city. Diets, plans and health
