The sport of windsurfing has evolved over the years to become something more than just any other activity on water. Recent studies have confirmed that windsurfing is a great exercise for both the mind and body. While the more adventurous crave for the adrenaline rush that accompanies riding the waves at break neck speeds, some prefer a less risky ride through gentler waves.

For whatever reason people may want to surf, the feeling of the salty sea air rushing past your face as you glide over the water with nothing but a board under your feet is something that needs to be experienced to believe.

Wind surfing is available in almost all beach resorts but there are specific destinations in the world which are famed for the sport and are frequented by wind surfing enthusiasts the year around. Here is a list of the more popular areas that are known not only for the sport but also for the amazing array of alternate activities that keep you as well as your group entertained.

Spain: Welcome to the Wind Capital of Europe, Tarifa. The area is strategically situated right where the Mediterranean Sea meets with the Atlantic Ocean at the southernmost region of Spain. The Straits of Gibraltar play host to the hordes of visitors who frequent the region and there are plenty of wind surfing shops in the area. Apart from enjoying some quality time surfing, you get to enjoy fantastic Andalusian attractions.

Virgin Islands: Frequented by trade winds throughout the year, this part of Britain enjoys warm waters with a matching climate. Also called as the Sailing Capital of the World, the region is also famous for its alternate sporting activities which include kayaking, diving, snorkeling, hiking and of course sailing. The inner bays are crowded with beginners while experts venture further out into the sea for bigger swells.

Italy: If you are afraid that the waves might drag you out into the ocean, try surfing in a closed body of water. You heard right! The Lago di Garda, also called Lake Garda is a famous wind surfing destination in Italy. The lake is frequented by strong winds that blow in from the North during the day and from South as evening grows near.

There are other activities that keep you entertained as well. Camping, cruising, biking and horseback riding enable you to explore the picturesque area which is dotted with beach resorts, night clubs, restaurants and ancient monuments.

Dominican Republic: For those who prefer to surf in warmer waters, Cabarete is the place to be. United States of America: Hawaii has always been a hot spot for beach lovers and the island of Maui is frequented by windsurfers from around the world for its humongous swells and gusty winds.

Canary Islands: The South Eastern area of Gran Canaria is famous for the winds that blow over the island for most part of the year. Also considered as a second home by numerous windsurfing experts, the island plays host to several competitions with a relatively warmer climate compared to other areas in Europe.

United States of America: The State of Oregon in the USA also plays host to a number of windsurfing enthusiasts who visit the Columbia River. Apart from braving gale like winds and bog waves, visitors can also enjoy biking, land cruising and hiking in the naturally beautiful surroundings which also include the Mt. Hood National Forest.

Mauritius: Mauritius is a paradise in itself and what could be more blissful than surfing in its waters. The island of Le Morne is home to the trade winds that blow over the islands the year around. The best months are from May to September and everyone right from the beginner to the expert is sure to have a ball in the water! Todo sobre videojuegos

But a word of caution before you head out to sea. Wear reef boots as the shallow waters are covered with reefs that might cut through your skin. The deeper waters are fit only for more advanced surfers.

Greece: If you are an avid windsurfer and are heading out to Greece for the vacation, then Rhodes is your ultimate holiday destination. Also popularly called Isle of the Sun, the island is for the most part sunny and is conveniently located in the Aegean Sea which is known for its mild and also strong winds.

Get into the water early in the morning and have a blast as the waves pick up speed by late afternoon. Apart from hanging out in the water practically all day, you can also enjoy exploring the various fortresses, charming Greek villages and ancient ruins that dot the area in addition to savoring mouth watering dishes and wine.

Costa Rico: And finally, we visit Lake Arsenal in Costa Rico. Strong winds keep the waters choppy and surfers can enjoy coursing through the waves that form at the middle of the lake and end at the edges. You can also enjoy a road trip through the surrounding natural areas while others prefer to revel in the activities of horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing or trekking through the dense jungles.
