Often confused with its neighbor, the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), this central African country is home to the largest expanse of virgin and nearly inaccessible equatorial rainforests. It is surrounded by Central African Republic, Cameroon, Gabon, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Gulf of Guinea. A former French colony, the country gained its independence in 1960, but has been facing political unrest from time to time partly owing to its large offshore oil reserve.
The Republic of Congo’s beautiful capital city Brazzaville is located on the Congo river. With one – third of the country’s population residing in the city, Brazzaville is a busy vibrant city. You can visit the Palais du Peuple, the beautiful church Basilique Sainte-Anne of the Congo, the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral Sacre-Coeur, the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza memorial and the colorful markets of Poto-Poto, Bacongo and Moungali. For the party people there are several nightclubs and bars. An hour’s drive away, you can also visit the Ile Mbamou island.
From Brazzaville proceed to the sea port town of Pointe Noire – a popular tourist destination on the Atlantic coast. You can also take a trip to the villages of Diosso and Loango, which were a major slave trading point during the colonial times. Enjoy the fantastic scenery of the cliffs and gorges in Diosso.
A vast stretch of the land covered by thick rainforests, Congo is the home of the famous lowland Gorillas and Chimpanzees. Visit the Lesio Louna Gorilla Reserve. A protected site this sanctuary is home to the western lowland gorillas where they live in a protected environment.
The stretch of undisturbed rainforest at the Odzala National Park covering an area of 13,600 sq km is one of Africa’s most remote and biggest tropical ecosystems. The country also boasts of several rapids in the Congo and Kouillou rivers, where you can try a host of adventure sports like white water rafting and water skiing.
Once home to the legendary pygmy tribe and later the bantu tribe, the people of Congo are warm, welcoming with a love for music. Visiting Congo is sure to be a wonderful experience.
