Want to explore different places, meet people, and enjoy solitude? But at the same time, want it to be affordable? Try backpacking. It is a way of being able to see different things, being able to survive with the bare essentials and at the same time have a good time.
Backpacking has grown considerably of late and it combines hiking, camping and trekking. You can go backpacking for a week or several weeks, depending on your destination and the number of places you want to cover at a time. It is basically low-cost travelling, using public transport, staying in youth hostels, and having such things packed in the backpack, which won’t be available locally.
People generally go backpacking to see how they can survive for days with the simplest of things available, cook in forests, feel the thrill of spending nights in tents and of course keep the travel within their budget.
You need to be able to plan out well, have a clear set of places to visit, have adequate quantity of water, food, clothing and shelter to help you stay fit and healthy throughout your trip. All of your stuff should be packed in your backpack, and should be carefully done after considering the type of trip you are planning and the number of days you are going to travel. You should always make room for adjustment when travelling in groups and keep the different possibilities in mind. Always make sure that you have arrangements ready for an overnight stay, a cold night, and ample food for any emergencies.
Check the weather conditions, have a first aid kit ready in case of injuries and pack light so you can enjoy the places better, travel longer distances with ease and worry less about your backpack. But at the same time, remember to include lots of water, properly stored food like butter, bread, cheese, fruits and pasta for day and night. Even energy bars and chocolates are a good option.
Include the bare essentials like 2 or 3 T-shirts, shorts, swim wear (if you happen to go swimming), trousers, and an old pair of jeans. Make sure that they dry quickly so that you can wear them throughout. Also, the other things that shouldn’t be missed are towels, plastic plates, bowls and spoons for eating, sleeping bag (which can easily be folded and thrust in your bag), a tent, a raincoat (for any unforeseen rains), a hat or cap, cosmetics (for ladies), an army knife (which proves to be very useful), a cleaning soap bar, medicines, waterproof matchboxes and a mosquito repellant to get rid of mosquitoes in the night. If you can’t take a sleeping bag, use a thick jacket as a pillow.
Other things that are needed are camera, torch, batteries, alarm clock, pen and notepad (to keep track of places visited and landmarks), a book to give you company, a guide book which will give you directions and information about the place, sunscreen lotion, sun glasses and maps.
If you happen to run out of water, you can get it from rivers and lakes. But make sure to boil the water before drinking it. Have sufficient money, but don’t unnecessarily stuff your wallet. Though backpacking is mostly followed by individual travelers, it is advisable to travel with a few friends for company. Remember to keep yourself hydrated, eat well, take care of each other and stay away from animals and mosquitoes.

Backpacking seems to be real fun. After reading this would want to try this out atleast once in my lifetime. Thanks for the information. Vinos de Granada
I have never meet a traveler who, after five trips, brags, “Every year I pack heavier.” The measure of a good traveler is how light he travels. You can’t travel heavy, happy, and cheap. Pick two.
