Travel + leisure magazine had recently named Udaipur in Rajasthan, India as the world’s best city. It is also popularly known as the “Venice of the East”. A visit to Udaipur will give you a glimpse of life in the ancient times, rural life of Udaipur. It also gives you many options when it comes to shopping for ethnic and unique products.

Gulab Bagh is a beautiful rose garden which was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in the late 19th century near the Lake Pichhola. You can also find some ancient books if you spend some time in the library which is built inside the garden. You can come across certain animals like tiger and chinkaras and birds in the zoo adjacent.

 

If you come to Lake Pichholi, don’t miss Bagore Ki Haveli, which was home to emperors like Mewar Pratap Singh and Maharana Hamir Singh during the 18th Century. It has around 138 rooms, terraces, huge balconies, corridors and courtyards. There are also some exquisite glass and mirror works on display. Many colours are clubbed together to make two unique peacock works.

The City Palace is another must-see because of its beautiful ancient palaces. Many towers and balconies give a wonderful view of the city beyond. Stepping down from the palace will lead you to the armory museum which houses many protective sheaths and weapons. Rajya Angan, the royal courtyard of the kings and queens is just around the corner. Ruby Palace and Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) are the other attractions. Dudh Talai is a famous rock garden from where you can have an excellent view of the setting sun. You can have an evening walk with your loved ones here. There is also a musical fountain which is very famous among visitors.

Indulge in some retail therapy at the Ahar Museum, which has a good collection of antiques, iron objects, earthen pots, art and metal works. Shilpgram, also known as the artisan’s village, is a place which depicts the true rural life of Udaipur with its houses made up of mud and local building materials. Folk artists also perform various acts for the tourists.

Shilpgram Utsav is held annually and has many hand-woven clothes, embroideries, handicrafts and neat mirror works on sale. Many potters, weavers and artisans come together to make this festival a hit every year. Many workshops which specialize in teaching about the ancient crafts are also organized. Health Tips
