One of the far-famed attractions of Vermont that assures you of a journey into the nineteenth century is the imperial ‘Wilson Castle’. Wilson castle stands as a representative of the architectural style of the 19th century in the city of Vermont. This historical monument was built with a unique architectural style by a physician, John Johnson in 1867. Johnson’s stay at the castle was quite brief owing to his inability of paying the imposed taxes and maintenance charges. The castle is composed of 32 rooms that distributed over 3 floors. Located at the West Proctor Road, Vermont, in the midst of Green Mountains the castle encompasses an area of approx. 115 acre.

Still wondering why the castle has been named as the ‘Wilson Castle’? Well that’s because the castle was sold to many different people until 1939 when it was purchased by Colonel Herbert Wilson who was the last buyer of the estate. Mr. Wilson innovatively created a radio station at the castle in the stable which functional to this day. Since then, five generations of the Wilson family have lived in the castle. The castle was opened to for visitations and tours in 1962.

 

The castle is open for visitations to the public, from the month of May to October for a nominal admission fee.The tours start off at 7a.m in the morning and continue till 11p.m at night. The facade of the castle has been constructed with English bricks and French marble in Dutch architectural style. The elegantly designed fireplaces have been built by employing the use of imported tiles and bronze, with the highlights of the interiors being the 84 sparkling stained glass windows. Castle is filled with decorative items like antiques from Asia and Europe, beautiful rugs, and authentic Chinese scrolls. Thrilling haunted castle trips are held in the month of October.
