This natural marvel along with an open sea aquarium allows visitors to take part in an interesting array of marine activities. Founded in the year 1980, the Xel -Ha Aquatic Theme Park is located along the Caribbean coast in Mexico, in an area called the Riveria Maya.

The highlight of the Xel – Ha Aquatic Park is the fact that the entire park surrounds a naturally formed lagoon which acts as an inlet to let water into the park. The lagoon is a mixture of fresh underground river water and surface sea water.

 

The natural inlet thus formed houses over hundreds of species of marine animals including several kinds of fishes and flora. The park also contains a turtle reserve which doubles as a research center dedicated to studying about the marine life in the area its ecological significance.

There is a separate shark’s zone which is branched off by a steel mesh that extends underwater. The lagoon is open to the general public and snorkeling and scuba diving are two of the most popular activities at the park.

At certain places under the water, the naturally formed limestone has suffered erosion to form many small caves and openings which are a pleasure to explore.

There are so many land, water and adventure activities to take part in at the Xel- Ha Aquatic Park and there’s something interesting for everyone in the family. The land activities offered include bicycling through the jungle and forest trekking. The more popular water activities include swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, scuba diving, sea trekking, dolphin trekking and manatee encounters.

If you are the more adventurous type, you can try out the more daring activities offered by the park. Some of these include the Cliff of Courage which has you plummeting into the lagoon from the edge of an imposing cliff; the Trepachanga which requires you to balance your way across the traditional trepachanga; and the Floating Bridge. In addition to these activities, there are so many interesting landmarks and sites to explore in and around the park. Regular guided tours are arranged to these places and guests can pre book these tours at the park. Some of the more popular excursions include tours to the Natural Inlet, the El Dorado Cavern, the Mayan Cave, the Chaac Mangal and to Ixchel’s Gulf.

The park also houses several eco friendly attractions and arranges tours to these places in order to educate guests about the importance of an ecologically balanced environment. The so called eco friendly attractions include the Mayan Caves, Chacah’s Garden, the Apiary and the Plant Nursery.

After an entire day of tiring activities, guests will be delighted to know that the Xel – Ha Aquatic Water Park has several places where visitors can just wind down and relax. The Beach area and the Bay of Caprices are popular hangouts for families and couples who seek seclusion. With miles and miles of sandy beaches, these areas are winners with beach combers and sun lovers.

Hammock Island is a secluded portion of land near the park which is known for its spectacular underwater life and the pristine sandy beach above. The park arranges regular island hopping excursions to the island with a limited number of guests visiting the island at any one given time.

The park also organizes regular tours to the nearby Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Chichen Itza.
