Ravello Travel Guide & Tourist Attractions

This picturesque little town clings dramatically on the cliffs above the Amalfi Coast overlooking the blue waters of the Gulf of Salerno. It’s more like a village – peaceful and historic – with a population of hardly 2000. Ravello is popular with tourists and honeymooners because of its romantic ambience, beautiful gardens, medieval buildings, breathtaking views of the coastline and the old world charms it exudes.

Ravello’s major tourist attraction is the intricately designed 11th century Cathedral – the revered Duomo. Its elegant white marble interior is a perfect backdrop for weddings. Some tourist couples come here to get married.

Close to the Cathedral is the magnificent Villa Rufolo, constructed some 800 years ago, amidst a beautiful garden that had inspired German composer Wagner to write  his musical opera Parsifal. The architecture of the complex has Arabic influence. Visit the adjoining Moorish cloister and marvel at the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean coastline.

The 11th century Villa Cimbrone is another landmark and is now a luxurious hotel. It had astonished famous people with diverse backgrounds like politician Winston Churchill, actress Greta Garbo and writer Virginia Woolf. The villa’s expansive complex includes a luxurious hotel, an arched crypt in Gothic style, an arabesque cloister and a garden as beautiful as the one in Rufolo. From here you get the spectacular view of the ancient Paestum with its Greek temples. The 10th century Church of San Giovanni del Toro is famous for its 12th century pulpit based on round arches decorated with mosaic and wonderful frescos. calculadora de dias fertiles

The nearest airport is at Naples – 67 km from Ravello and 60 from Amalfi. You can hire a taxi and drive along the nerve-wracking Amalfi Coast road that gets congested during high season. Traveling by bus from the airport to Amalfi and hiring a taxi from there is a better option.

Palazzo Sasso is the most luxurious hotel located in an impressive 12th century villa, overlooking the sparkling waters of the sea and picturesque fishing villages. Since it opened in 1997 it was rated as one of the world’s best hotels. Other places are also available – from less gorgeous to modest bed-and-breakfast. Book a hotel in advance after browsing through the Internet.

The pleasure of dining out in a cliff-side restaurant with amazing views of the coastline increases manifold while relishing local cuisine made from fresh seafood and other local produce supplemented by local wines where winemaking is an ancient tradition. Amalfi Coast is famous for its ceramics tradition. Ravello has some excellent shops selling exquisite tableware, tiles, tabletops and decoration pieces.

Ravello is also a favorite honeymoon destination. It’s an ideal place to get married at the ancient Cathedral followed by a memorable honeymoon on this amazing coast. Or – as most people do –  simply come here for enjoying a wonderful holiday.
