Liberia; an Overview

Liberia is a relatively small country surrounded by Sierra Leone and Guinea. It is a country with US ties and the country capital, Monrovia is even named by an US president James Monroe. Mangrove forests cover the coastline.

The climate is a typical equatorial climate rendered by the close proximity of the country to the equator. It is hot all the year round and rains heavily in the months of October- November. The winters are also not pleasurable owning to the dry Harmattan winds that blow. The amount of dust and debris that is brought in during this time proves to be a real menace. Traveling during these months is strictly unadvisable.

Monrovia is the capital city with a population of a million. Other major cities, which are great tourist attractions, are Robertsport (good for surfing), Greenville, Harper and Paynesville (an excellent spot for base-jumping).

If sports are not your forte, you still can have a very good time in Liberia. There is the Sapo National Park and the Blue Lake, which are good places to see. The providence islands, where the first Liberians lived, might also interest you.
