7 Tips For Parents Of Children With ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) was earlier known as Attention Deficit Disorder. This change in terminology was made because children who have difficulty paying attention are usually hyperactive as well.

Such children do not deliberately try to be difficult. It is a psychological problem that has recently gained medical recognition. Some of the signs and symptoms of ADHD include inability to focus on one thing for too long, constant fidgetiness, getting stuck on one task in order to achieve perfection etc.

If you are a parent looking after a child with ADHD, it is a trying and difficult task. You need to be on your toes constantly and are unable to give yourselves any time or attention. Your own needs are often ignored and put on the backseat.

You may also tend to blame yourselves for your child’s problems and deficiencies. But you must always remember that your child can not make much progress in life without your dedication and perseverance. Here is a list of tips that can help make life a little better and easier for you while taking care of your child.

Look at the Bright Side of Things

For your child to do well, it is important that your thought process is positive at all times. Do not always think pessimistically about your family’s situation. ADHD may make your child different from others but it also makes him/her good at a few things as well (mathematics, logic, abstract thought etc.)

Do not Neglect your own Requirements

For you to be happy in such a situation, it is essential to look after yourself as well. Take out a little time for yourself (as difficult as this may be). The parents should go out for a meal alone at least once a month. Don’t forget to take care of your health as well.

Set a Timetable

When there is a child suffering from ADHD in a home, it is very important for the whole family to follow a set schedule. This brings predictability and order to the whole day.

It will be very convenient if both you and your child know exactly what has to be done next. This leaves little scope for negotiations and tantrums. You can even offer rewards and treats for every chore/job that is done properly and in time. Diets, plans and health

Form a circle of trust and support

This is very important for the mother and father of an ADHD-affected child. Seek the help of loved ones in looking after your son/daughter. Request grandparents, aunts, uncles, grownup siblings, friends etc. to pitch in once in while. This will give you some free time to distress yourselves and also provide a backup plan in case of emergencies.

Help your child Relax through Different Activities

Do not make extra-curricular activities sound like chores or compulsory tasks. Make them fun and enjoyable. Physical exertion through sports is a very good way of calming down such children. It tires them out and releases feel-good chemicals in the brain. It will also make them sleep better which in turn results in a relaxed and happy child.

Establish good Dietary Habits

Make sure your child eats the right type of foods and follows a set eating schedule. Do not let him/her miss any meals or eat too many refined goods. Erratic meals make such kids cranky and irritable.

Encourage Socializing

Meeting new people is a very good way of helping your child become more confident. Children tend to bring out the best in each other. This is why making friends is very important for negating some problems caused by ADHD. This will also give him/her a chance to relate to people outside the family circle.
