Considered to be a very sacred place, Machu Picchu is an example of the brilliance of Incan architecture. Till date it remains a mystery as to how all the limestone used in the construction were carried atop the mountain. The architecture of Machu Picchu is very typical of the Incas, with its polished stone walls and limestone walls. The main buildings include the Sun Temple, the Intihuatana and the Room of Three Windows.
The Intihuatana is considered to be a ritual stone, an ancient sun dial. The ruins are divided into an urban section and an agricultural section with evidence of terrace farming having been practiced. The place was fortified by thick and high limestone walls and it housed approximately 10000 people.
