Peru Attraction

Sandwiched among the mighty Andes, the Amazon rain forest and the arid coastal plain, Peru is the home of the legendary Incas – worshippers of the Sun God. One of the new seven wonders of the World, the ancient lost city of the Incas – ‘Machu Picchu’ is the country’s most famous attraction.

A very important archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the fascinating ruins of Machu Picchu is located unusually atop a high mountainous ridge in the Urubamba valley with the Urubamba river flowing far below. The most popular symbol of the Incan Empire, a visit to Peru is never complete without a visit to this ancient lost citadel.

Built around the 15th century, Machu Picchu served as an estate of the Incas for about 100 years. It was built during the reign of emperor Pachacuti, which was the golden era of the Incan rule. When the Spaniards invaded, the Incas abandoned the site, which protected the place from being plundered. It remainedhidden to the outside world for centuries. Finally in 1911, it was discovered by historian Hiram Bingham. Several theories exist as to the purpose building a citadel at such a remote location. Some regarded it as a prison, some regarded it as a testing area for agriculture, an economic centre and some regard it as a traditional birthplace of the Incas. Aparatos de masajes

Considered to be a very sacred place, Machu Picchu is an example of the brilliance of Incan architecture. Till date it remains a mystery as to how all the limestone used in the construction were carried atop the mountain. The architecture of Machu Picchu is very typical of the Incas, with its polished stone walls and limestone walls. The main buildings include the Sun Temple, the Intihuatana and the Room of Three Windows.

The Intihuatana is considered to be a ritual stone, an ancient sun dial. The ruins are divided into an urban section and an agricultural section with evidence of terrace farming having been practiced. The place was fortified by thick and high limestone walls and it housed approximately 10000 people.

A must visit for all history buffs and even if you are not one. Machu Picchu offers wonderful insight into the lives and times of the great Incas. So, pack your bags, Machu Picchu is waiting.
